The LivingRoom for Families iOS app uses screenshot-based monitoring to allow a parent or accountability partner to monitor all activity on an iPhone or iPad. With a recent update, the app sends an email notification as soon as sexually explicit or suggestive content is detected in a screenshot. The screenshot feed can be filtered by explicit or suggestive screenshots.

Email Alerts when sensitive content is detected

LivingRoom already uses privacy-preserving sensitive image analysis to block creation and viewing of nudity on iPhone

With the latest update, if LivingRoom's AI-based image classifier detects sexually explicit or suggestive content in a screenshot, the parent is immediately notified via email.

A parent can click the link in the email to review the screenshots in context.

This ensures that a parent knows about the incident and can review the context surrounding how the explicit content was discovered.

A parent can also optionally enable alerts for potentially suggestive content (such as revealing clothing or bikini images) in order to maintain awareness of borderline content before it escalates into more explicit material.

Suggestive content isn't automatically blocked, but this accountability layer can help a parent remediate.

Filterable Screenshot feed of daily iPhone activity

A parent or accountability partner can review screenshots of exactly what was being looked at on an iPhone or iPad. This provides complete visibility into iPhone activity, no matter what app is being used.

This feed can now be filtered to show any screenshots that are flagged as explicit or suggestive, which simplifies the review process.

Blurring of Sexually Explicit or Suggestive Screenshots

In order to provide a safer experience for parents or accountability partners, who are monitoring screenshots of iPhone activity, sexually explicit or suggestive screenshots are blurred. Blurring intensity depends on the classification of the image.

  • If an image is clearly identified as sexually explicit content, the maximum level of blurring is used so that specific details can’t be seen.
  • If an image is identified as sexually suggestive, the image is moderately blurred so that a parent can review the screenshot to see if the content is problematic.
