If you have a Chromebook, then you've probably wondered what kinds of restrictions you can enable that allow you to limit how it can be used. Device management is typically used on smartphone devices, but you can achieve similar results for Chromebooks by using Google Workspace.

Google Workspace grants you access to a bunch of extra features not available to free tier users, which you can explore here .

However, when it comes to self-management, there are several notable features you can enable:

  • Force usage of certain apps and browser extensions (prevent uninstall)
  • Enforce Google's Adult Content restrictions
  • Block apps and extensions based on capability

Cost

  • Domain name ($12/year if you don't have one)
  • Gsuite basic plan ($6/month)
  • Chromebook Enterprise ($50/device/year)

Configure Google Workspace

Video walkthrough of how to configure Google Workspace.

Reference the exact steps below:

Once you choose a domain, note that you'll pay a renewal fee of $12/year to keep it active.

Now we will Downgrade the account to the $6/user/month plan

After the 30 day trial, you'll need to pay $50/device/year to continue the subscription.

You currently only have one email address for your organization created - your Administrator email.

You can create other email accounts if needed (+$6/month for each user).

For individuals who are self-managing:

You don't need to add any more users or email addresses.

For parents managing for children:

  • A managed Chromebook must be signed into using a business/organization email address, like the one you created earlier.
  • If you have only one email address, the user account login for the Chromebook would be your Admin email address. In this case, your child will have to ask permission to login to the Chromebook.
  • If you want the child to have login access without asking you, then you should create another email address like [email protected] to be used for the Chromebook login.

Enroll Device

After you finishing signing up and you login to the Chromebook, feel free to add any personal Google drive, Chrome accounts, Play Store accounts as needed.

Configure Device Restrictions

Note
This only restricts your ability to login to the Chromebook with an organization email. You can still login to a personal Google account (for Gdrive, Gmail etc.) after you login
