How do Disable the Radio Feature in Apple Music on iPhone
Completely disable the Radio feature in Apple Music on iPhone so that only media in the library can be played.
If you’ve used the Apple Music app on an iPhone, you might have realized that Apple’s Radio feature is not always family-friendly and could be problematic for some people. Fortunately, it's possible to completely disable Radio so that the Apple Music app can only be used to play media in your library on an iPhone or iPad.
We'll go through three options for completely blocking radio in Apple Music on iPhone:
- Disabling Apple Radio by blocking the associated web addresses
- Using Apple's parental controls to turn off the radio feature
- Using Supervised Mode to disable Apple Radio without requiring the use of an app or Screen Time.
Choosing an Effective Blocking Approach for Apple Radio in the Music App on iOS
Apple Music’s radio feature is just one of the many things you might want to consider disabling if your goal is to block adult content in Apple Music. If you’re a parent setting up a child’s iPhone or an accountability partner for an adult, restricting radio is a great idea if you’d like to limit Apple Music so it only plays tracks saved to your collection.
While this might work in the vast majority of cases, parents and accountability partners might still consider going a step further and monitoring the iPhone, too. For example, the LivingRoom for Families app uses screenshot monitoring to fully capture activity on an iPhone, including in Apple Music or other social media apps that are typically not possible to monitor.
Block the Web Addresses Apple Music uses to provide its Radio Feature
Instead of blocking the Apple Music app entirely, you can block the web addresses Apple Music uses to find and play music in the radio player. You have to be careful not to block all music from being played at all, but this is possible if you use DNS-based filtering to block these specific web addresses.
For example, using Tech Lockdown’s Content Policy , block these domains:
radio.itunes.apple.com liveradio.music.apple.com
If done correctly, Apple Music should play music like normal; however, the Radio feature just won’t work:
Disable Apple Radio with Supervised Config Files
It is possible to completely disable the Radio feature in the Apple Music app without needing to block specific web addresses, but it requires a specific kind of setup.
For example, using Tech Lockdown’s Apple Config Generator , I can customize the restrictions I’d like to enforce on my iPhone, like disabling Apple Radio.
The Config Generator creates a Config File that I can install on my iPhone if I’ve enabled something called Supervised Mode first (this restriction doesn’t work on a standard iPhone). Here’s what Apple Music looks like after the restriction is applied:
Supervised mode is a powerful alternative to Screen Time that is a better fit for adults who normally have full access to their own iPhone and Apple account. Because it’s more comprehensive and difficult to disable compared to Screen Time, it requires some basic setup on your iPhone first. See our dedicated guide for enabling supervised mode to learn more.
Use Screenshot Monitoring as a More Comprehensive Monitoring Approach
If you’re a parent or accountability partner for an adult, the most effective option to prevent and monitor activity on Apple Music is to use screenshot monitoring. This is a very comprehensive approach that works on any app.
For example, on iPhones, the LivingRoom for Families app allows parents to review how their child is using any app (not just Apple Music). The app includes automatic nudity protection, which cuts off the internet to the iPhone if nudity is found anywhere on the iPhone’s screen.
Screenshots for all apps, including Apple Music, can be viewed from LivingRoom's admin panel:
You might still consider limiting explicit content or disabling the radio feature, just to be safe or proactive, as opposed to reactive only.
